The station serves several rural hamlets, including Georgemas, Roadside and Banniskirk. It is also the nearest station to the village of Halkirk, which lies approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) west of the station. The station at Halkirk itself was closed in 1960

Transport and walking routes in the local area 

• Cycle or Hike to Achanarras Quarry Nature Reserve a fascinating fossil site in Caithness, is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Discover the world-famous fossil fish of this former quarry. A huge lake covered the area 380 million years ago. 
• Cycle/Hike to the village of Halkirk. Visit Halkirk Heritage & Vintage Motor Centre, Thurso – Museums | VisitScotland. Walk along the River Thurso and visit the scheduled monument of Braal Castle, thought to be constructed on the site of a Norse fort, once occupied by Harald ll of Orkney, Mormaer of Caithness, in the 11th century.
