The coastal village of Brora had the most northerly coal mine in Britain.  Its coal fuelled a wide range of different manufacturing industries: salt, bricks, whisky and tweed, becoming the industrial capital of the Highlands.  Using Brora coal-generated electricity at the local woollen mill, the owner sold his surplus power to the parish council to light the village streets from 1913, earning the village the nickname ‘The Electric City’!
